The Cub Cares Community Foundation is devoted to three key initiatives designed to make a difference in individual communities - hunger relief, youth education, and health and wellness.
The Foundation assists local food shelves by providing donated food items to ensure that needy families can put meals on the table.
Similarly, the Cub Cares Community Foundation administers a local scholarship program for high school seniors, and helps fund the Minnesota Life College's annual scholarship program.
Reaching beyond the retail setting, we're committed to making our neighborhoods a better place to live.
Helping People Serving People
Adults who lack education, job training and work experience are more likely to end up homeless. That's where People Serving People (PSP) comes in. PSP, located in downtown Minneapolis, offers career opportunities to those who come there seeking food, shelter and
other necessities.
Through its Workplace Development Program, PSP offers adults free training in three fields: facilities maintenance, culinary arts and information technology.
The highly structured, hand-on courses teach skills the students can use to land good-paying jobs in high-demand areas, such as food services, building maintenance and data entry. Graduates also receive job placement assistance.
Serving The American Red Cross
The deadly collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis was a major tragedy that reverberated around the world. When Cub Foods' employees near the site heard about the disaster, they sprung into action.
Beginning just hours after the bridge fell and continuing with the long search for victims in the Mississippi River, crews from Cub continuously shuttled food, water and other essential supplies to the American Red Cross headquarters, located near the scene. Stores in the area provided everything from truckloads of sandwiches for rescue workers and investigators, to fresh apples and oranges when First Lady Laura Bush visited the site.
"The people of Cub made a big difference in our response to the bridge collapse," said Garrett Alessandroni, Mass Care Manager for the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Red Cross. "Usually after a disaster, we'd be in chaos, calling up vendors for food and water. But we had no delays because people from Cub responded so fast. And in the days that followed, they provided anything we needed, day or night."
Cub salutes the men and women who devoted their time and energy to helping others in the wake of this tragedy.
Partnering with Second Harvest Heartland
Food is humanity's most essential need. But hunger is on the rise in our communities, with more and more families struggling to make ends meet because of everything from higher gas prices to mortgage foreclosures.
The Cub Cares Community Foundation is committed to alleviating hunger. We've made great strides by partnering with our employees, our customers and groups such as Second Harvest Heartland and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Cub Foods has helped donate more than one million pounds of food to Second Harvest by sponsoring the annual Letter Carriers' food drive.
Cub also helped sponsor Second Harvest Heartland's major annual fundraising event, called DISH. This year's theme was "Cuisine for change, from Minnesota with love," and featured food from some of the state's best restaurants, along with live and silent auctions. Cub President Brian Huff was honorary chairman of the event, which attracted more than 700 people and raised almost $50,000 for hunger relief.
